My Favourite Song

Following on from a blog post by Steve Heyes, I decided to take a moment to think about what I would consider to be my favourite song, the one that defined who I am and that I’d love to hear forever. Luckily for me my Last.fm account has nearly 60,000 scrobbles, representing over five years of musical taste and history. Unfortunately, what I’d consider to be my number one song actually comes in at number three.

Hurt, by Johnny Cash.

This is actually a cover of another favourite band of mine, Nine Inch Nails. I can still remember the moment I first heard it, as a backing track to a Halo machinema video. At the time the lyrics felt familiar and it wasn’t until I found the source of the video (this was in the time before YouTube and a million comments to scour through) that I found out the artist.

Ever since I’ve listened to it at least once a week it feels like. At the end of a long day, or a quiet morning, I’ll put it on and just listen. It’s rare these days to find a song that can be enjoyed by itself.

Naturally I have other close favourites, a lot from Creed who would be my favourite band overall (and rightly so with nearly 3,000 scrobbles!). But yeah, if I had to pick a song to be played as my epitaph, Hurt would be it.
