First of all, if anyone wants to run with this idea or knows where it’s already done, holler. I’ve got a few TV shows and movies. And by a few, I mean in the thousands. All ripped from my DVDs and stored on a Drobo under my TV. And the biggest problem I have now? Picking something to watch. Seriously. What I want is a better way to find something to fill the time.

When you think about movies, you don’t think by release year or rating; the common options for filtering through content. If I’m looking for an episode to watch I want “something short (<20 mins) and self-contained (not story arc)". I started pulling together some basic code. A mix of ELO ratings and multiple dimensions. I tag a movie or show on a couple of axis, how cheesy it is, how much attention it warrants, and can then look for movies that lie across these lines.

The only downside is it requires a large expense of time to tag the content. Maybe there’s a way to try and pair ratings vs budget to give cheesiness, or two-parters vs guest stars to work out story arcs in shows.

Anyway, I’m hopping between DS9 and 90s action flicks at the moment. Maybe I’ll release this as an extension to Plex.
