Link Bait

A pretty small haul of links this week because I’ve been doing stuff instead of consuming stuff. Sometimes that’s good. But then there’s the Web 3.0 feeling of missing out if you’re not looking at every social media update that comes your way.

Facebook Cold Storage – Storing 1,000 PB of anything is pretty freaking cool. Some nice ideas in this, though the practicalities for others (namely the remaining 99.99% of sites) are negligible.

Unison – I’ve included Unison, not because I’ve read up much on it yet, but because what I have seems to show something rather novel. Let’s face it, beyond the onset of OOP in the 90s, not much has changed in programming since before my Dad was born.

jQuery My – Sometimes you don’t need a whole great stonking framework for a little bit of interactivity. There have been a couple of late-binding JS libraries, this is another one that looks nice and simple with some good tricks.

Image Scaling using Deep Neural Networks – Gone are the days of just dumping stuff through a phpthumb resizer. Nowadays you’ve got to be smart to get the best images to the right devices.

Game of Thrones via Google Maps – I’m just going to put this here. Not only because it looks nice, but because it shows just how much better Google Maps are than almost all other cartography services.

Friday video goodness – This is a bit of a copout, but it’s a nice way of reusing someone else’s content. Every Friday I get an email of neat videos. Some funny, some weird, some weirder still, but all good. Sign up.
