Node Links

I got an email this morning, while pushing some fixes to a repo while still curled up in bed. Digital Ocean are migrating away from the old AMS1 DC. Which means I’ve spent the morning getting ready to move things back to Linode. I’ve been happy with DO, but Linode have always felt like the more grown-up company. Anyway, there’s a bucketload of links this week, so get clicking.

One-Minute Time Machine – A nice bit of humour to start your weekend. Be careful, if you start browsing the channel you may lose more time than you wished.

2 Kinds of People – More humour! Probably a sign I need to stop looking at code.

Using Spotify to measure the popularity of older music – Teen Spirit, who would have thunk it.

Android Wear now works with iPhones – It’s really telling that while Google, Microsoft and even RIMBlackBerry all put out apps on iOS, it’s still the exception for Apple.

The Story Behind How Pocket Hit 20M Users with 20 People – The advantage of being lean is focus, not speed. From focus, all others are derived.

How McLaren uses F1 tech to make every other industry better – I might not like F1, but you can’t deny the technology and processes are amazing.

UpUp – We kind of take it for granted, always having a network signal. But take a trip to Cornwall or Yosemite and you soon realise how lost you are without a connection.

Shields.io – How did I not know about this before? Expect my repos and projects to be littered with these things now!

Editorial insights into running the new bbc.co.uk – If there’s one constant with change on the web, it’s that the last version was always the better version if you go by the comments.

How Google’s new logo is just 305 bytes – I’d like to think this is a happy result of the decision.

BareMetal SSD cloud servers for you – A cheap and cheerful ARM server for a couple quid each month.

Eight Terminal Utilities Every OS X Command Line User Should Know – The terminal is your friend.

Writing code that writes code – At least they sign the code to discourage manual edits. Can’t help but wonder at the logic of it all.

Migrating bajillions of database records at Stripe – Bajillion is an understatement. Get this wrong and it’s money you’re losing.

5 Questions Every Unit Test Must Answer – I love testing. It only really shows it’s strengths six months later when you tweak something. TDD on the other hand, meh.

How imgix Built A Stack To Serve 100,000 Images Per Second – It’s surprising GD and ImageMagick are still so far behind what Apple can offer, meaning a rock full of Mac Pros is a good investment.

Under the Hood of Amazon EC2 Container Service – The low-low down. Containers are going to take over the world.
