Black Death

We went into this film not quite sure what to expect. On the one hand you’ve got Sean Bean returning to the olden times which seems to suit him perfectly. But then you also have a relative newcomer (Eddie Redmayne) who is the main character you follow. The film itself feels muddled and the ending can be a bit of a disappointment.

Plot wise, the film is set in medieval England with the plague ravaging the land. Throw in a village that has supposedly escaped the death, Christian warriors determined to make sure no one strays from their wrathful god and you can pretty much sum this film up in three words: swords and death.

For all the mention of supernatural scariness, there isn’t a whole lot here that is either new or scary in the least. The final twist, something that could have given the film a much higher standing, instead feels like an after-thought.

There are better films out, the only people who would seriously want to see this film are those who cannot get enough of Sean Bean and considering his character, it’s probably not even worth it for that.

My rating: 5/10
