Knight & Day

Knight & Day has perhaps one saving grace; it’s not as bad as you’re expecting it to be. And that’s not really saying much given the general mood on Twitter in the run up to its release. Every element you expect to see, from CGI effects to cliche bad guys are present and correct. It’s a rare feat when the same lines of dialogue, funny in the trailer, become monotonous in the film itself. This is a film that’s a mish-mash of action and comedy with neither really pulling through to save the day.

Knight & Day stars Tom Cruise as a secret agent who, for reasons unknown, takes an interest in Cameron Diaz. What follows is a non-stop tour around the globe, punctuated by multiple shootouts. This could have been an exhilarating ride, with humour thrown in to keep the mood jovial. Instead it turns into a mish-mash of bad jokes and overly-worked firefights. The fate of both leads is never really in doubt and the plot, some stupid Zephyr that I won’t even get into the science of because it makes me cry, is more confusing because it’s so banal.

A well made film Knight & Day may be, but that doesn’t rescue it from its doomed fate. Cruise should stick to action and Diaz comedy. The “chemistry” between the two is paper thin and more cringe-worthy than enjoyable. A film for Wednesday nights on Channel Five it seems.
